We are Mulu Mentor

Our goal is simple: to help underrepresented pre-medical students get to medical school.

About Our Founder

Betelehem (Beti) Asnake, MD

Beti Asnake is an Ethiopian-American anesthesiologist in Northern California. As a former pre-medical student at UCLA, Dr. Beti understands first hand the challenges that come from being an underrepresented and disadvantaged candidate in the medical field. Without the guidance and support she received from key mentors, Dr. Beti believes she would not have been able to attend and finish medical school.

As the founder and manager of Mulu Mentor, she hopes to bridge the inequity gap that underrepresented and/or disadvantaged pre-medical students have to face in order to enter medical school. By matching pre-medical students with physician mentors who share similar ethnic/racial, academic and interest background, she hopes to provide not only academic but also emotional and moral support to her students.

Mulu - in Amharic means “whole” and is also Dr. Beti’s father late name. He used to be her #1 cheerleader and avid mentor in her pursuit of medicine.

“I created Mulu Mentor to empower underrepresented and disadvantaged pre-medical students in the rigorous journey to medical school.”

About the Program

Once admitted into our mentorship program, each mentor will be paired with a mentee and usually spends a minimum of 1 hour a month virtually in a structured format that achieves tangible and actionable guidance. Mulu Mentor helps facilitate the process by pairing mentors with suitable mentees, providing a framework for the mentorship and guidance throughout the process.
